On September 3, 1863, Brigadier General Alfred Sully’s brigade attacked a combined village of Yanktonai, Santee, and Teton Sioux at White Stone Hill, North Dakota, in a punitive expedition following the 1862 Dakota War. Sully’s troops surrounded the camp and utilized artillery (howitzers) to inflict severe casualties, killing 150-300 Sioux and taking hundreds of prisoners, destroying the camp entirely
